If you are an Indian & have an email account; I bet you have received the ‘Vote for Taj’ email. If not, please check your spam mail folder. If you really haven’t received such an email, hold your breath, count 10 & refresh your mailbox. The mail is there! Check it out!
The mail appeals all Indians to ‘Vote for the Taj Mahal’ to make it one of the new 7 wonders of the world. To my surprise, most of my friends (who are first class Engineers) have already voted & are spreading the message like anything. First of all, I do not understand who (the hell) in the world owns the rights to declare the 7 wonders of the world. I really admire the folks behind this concept. What a brilliant idea.
When I asked one of my colleagues about why she forwarded such an email to me; she asked me to delete it if I was not interested. I asked if she voted for Taj online. She said she did. I then asked about who is behind the poll? She said she has no idea. She further added that I should vote because that would confirm that I did something for my country. That was the end of the conversation. But it got me thinking.
Should I really be voting for the Taj? It will take only a minute of my time. It will take a minute of 2-3 million online Indians who will actually vote for the Taj. Lot of precious time & bandwidth will be wasted. ‘Taj’ might gain a place in new 7 wonders of the world, just because large number of Indians voted for it. But I think its ridiculous. The Taj is now old. It was built centuries ago. No doubt it is beautiful. But I do not think it’s one of the 7 wonders of the world.
If I were to vote, I’d have voted for the PETRONAS Twin Towers. A small country like Malaysia can have world’s tallest twin towers and we, a country 10 times as big as them, still have to rely on the Taj. Shame on us.
I’m not sure why I’m writing this. Like a true Indian, I shouldn’t make a big issue of this small thing & just forget it if I’m not interested in it.
