Presenting a *real* dialog between a girl who works in the software industry & yours truly, The Big K. For the sake of simplicity, we will call the girl as “SG” (Software Girl).
SG: Hi, do you have .Net CDs?
Big K: Why?
SG: I want them urgently.
Big K: I don’t have the CDs. Get them from the IT department of your company.
SG: No I want the CDs for my personal use.
Big K: So, what do you think about the burning issue of Software Piracy?
SG: You’re rude. I’ll get them from someone else.
So, here we have an educated lady who is an engineer and knows that by copying the CDs, she’s actually *stealing* someone else’s software. Probably, a software which took years to develop & lot of skill. But she thinks it’s okay to copy the CDs and use the software without having to pay for the license.
I usually get mixed reactions when I discuss the issue of software piracy with people. Some say, “Why the heck do they keep the software prices so high?”; others say, “There are millions out there who are using pirated software! Go, first, put them in jail”.
Aye ! That’s not my job. I’m here to make a point. I’m here to suggest a solution. Do you know something about ‘Open Source’? It’s a wonderful, ‘free’ world! Go, search the open source stuff, you’ll find everything there – from Operating Systems to Office Suites to Conferencing Utilities.
But don’t steal somebody else’s software, please!
