Man is a social animal. Big K is a man. Therefore, Big K is an animal.
Did I miss the word ‘social’?
Probably, I’m not social anymore. Because being ‘social’, today, means being on one of the social networking sites. I’m used to people screaming on my face “What?? You’re NOT on Orkut?? Why man??”. This scream follows with an immediate look that would resemble the look you’d have when you spot a cockroach inside your shoe. I smile. I just smile. Because I don’t know what to say. Maybe I’m just totally non-social.
Recently, I came up with a short answer to why I’m not on Orkut (or Facebook, or Hi5, or blah). “Because I don’t have time”, looked like a simple answer. But it too attracted strange looks. Well, I did create account on most of the social networking sites out of curiosity, but never used any of them. I’d not do anything unless I see investing my valuable time in it. I’d not do anything just because everyone else is doing it. Almost all of my friends are on most of the social networking sites and (I heard) are pretty popular on it. I gathered few of the things that people do on social networking sites. These are few of them :-
• Write scraps, short messages to friends, of friends, of friends.
• Lurk into each other’s personal lives
• Make friendship (Making friends)# with with members of opposite sex.
• Share videos, pictures etc.
• Improve your online-friend base.
• Kill time.
My best estimate is that there are few, say 0.001% people who use social networking for some real good. I personally think I’ve better things to do than the ones listed above. That’s why I’m not on social networking sites. Writing scraps is not my way of killing time. I’d rather read something on GigaOM or Life Hacker or just write a blog post here. My entertainment lies there. I never felt the need of finding out what the corner-bench-guy is doing in life. I never thought showing up 324 friends in my contact book is ‘cool’. I never thought writing ‘Haaai…sup’ makes me ‘gr8′. So, don’t ask why I’m not on Orkut.
It’s just that my time is very important.
