Update: Google called it a ‘bug’ & fixed it :p
… and Google’s trying to save Orkut by not letting Facebook import your contacts.
To begin with, I don’t like Orkut or Facebook – because I don’t like the overall concept of social networks. But months ago I mentioned that letting Google take control of everything is going to hurt. But no one really cares because ‘Google is such a good company – they give us everything for free’. No, I’m not against Google, but what they’re doing is certainly against their own data liberation thingy. It’d be interesting to see what’s Facebook (already the world’s largest social network) is doing to Orkut in India –
As everyone knows, Orkut is the biggest social network in India and almost everyone you know is on it, killing all the time in the world. However, since being on Facebook is ‘cooler’ than being on Orkut, people starting shifting to Facebook – and Facebook is allowing you to import your friends from Orkut. But not anymore! TechCrunch reports that Orkut’s export function is no longer functional. You can’t export your friends to Facebook anymore! Darn!
You might wonder, what’s the big deal? The big deal is Google’s approach towards keeping their top rank while dismissing what their users demand!
How can this attitude by a company you trust hurt you in future? Simple – they can start charging you few bucks to keep running your Gmail and those who would refuse to pay – will simply not able to move their email to other providers.
I know Google is a great company and what they’ve done to the Internet cannot be underestimated. I like Google. I’m really concerned about Google ceasing to be “Don’t Be Evil”.
Now, what do you think? I know you are there on Orkut. Are you ok that Google is not allowing you to move to Orkut?
