Mile Sur Vs. ‘Phir’ mile sur – mera tumhara

I stumbled upon the New ‘Phir Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ video – yet another temporary patriotic initiative by the Times Group. Frankly speaking, the new ‘Phir’ mile sur does not even come close to the magic of original Mile Sur mera tumhara. Few facts you might want to know about the Orignial Mile Sur Mera Tumhara –

Written By: Piyush Pande (who was then an accounts manager and now Executive Chairman and Creative Head of Oligvy and Mather, India)

Composed By: Ashok Patki (I used to think its A.R. Rehman!)

Had the context been America or World, Mr. Ashok Patki would have won all the damn Music Awards out there. Anyway.

Anyway, coming back to the rant; I don’t get the logic behind new “Phir Mile Sur Mera Tumhara” video/initiative. After watching the video (embedded below) I don’t figure out whether its about National Integration or something else. Just adding some base guitar & drums and rock style isn’t really ‘Phir mile sur”, its just damned copy of western style. Plus Deepika Padukone (umm, the one from BSNL ad) shouldn’t be standing in the middle of the river (whatever!) with a cheap lipstick that reflects all the sunlight on the camera is a big no-no.:|

Anyway. Let me know what you think through the comments. I’m embedding both videos for your perusal.

    Undoubtedly the Original Mile Sur is by far the best and infcat bestest. Inclusion of Bollywood personalities was unnecessary.No cricket and tennis persons disappointed as they have done our country proud.Was Mr.Bachchan and family required?

    I agree the original song should have been untouched and aired again!

    It is nice to see that trying to make new things based on old, but i didnt understand “Is this song made for the purpose of making money”. In the old version if we can observe many states and all the languages which are there by that time were covered. in this version i observed that there are many more personalities whom can take into this song.

    I am speechless at the brazen manner in which the makers of this new video have absolutely BUTCHERED the older version, sucked the soul out of it, and turned it into a cheap gimmick and a platform for Bollywood actors, in the garb of being the new role models of India, to have their 15 seconds of fame. I cannot BELIEVE the absolute impunity with which the actors have behaved in this video, treating it like it was another one of their dance-around-the-trees or rock-and-roll-on-the-stage routine songs. .. Somebody shud start a movement to ban this from being telecast

    ok, The attempt is appreciated, but the attempt sucked big time.
    without watching the vedio and listening to the newer mile sur, I could not do my work as i was feeling the song was all in bits and pecies. Thats about music.
    And whats with non inclusion of great figures of modern times??? Bring on people who have contributed to country , not those who act :-|.
    and i did not lsiten either of two mother tongues of mine ???!!
    the older version showed a unified INDIA with almost all languages sung, this one did not. Its dissapointing to see .

    What a rubbish! They turned something that was beautiful and depicted unity into a piece of crap. The older version really represented India, the tune and the virility was absolutely pronounced. I can still remember (or sing) the older mile sur.. with nearly all languages. But the newer is nothing but trash. Lost its soul to MODERN (cheap) music and BOLLYWOOD. 🙁

    HI, I TOTALY AGREE WITH U. DIPIKA PADUKONE WAS A MIS FIT IN THE VEDIO CUZ OF HER INAPPROPRIATE DRESSING. AND IN THE NEW VERSION OF PHIR MILE SUR I COULD SEE EVERY ONE ACTING AND WORKING ON EXPRESSIONS AND NOT REALLY FEELING THE TRUE MEANING AND MOTIVE OF THE SONG.. BUT THERE ARE A FEW PERSONALITIES WHO LIVED UP TO MY EXPECTATIONS TO NAME THEM ARE AR REHMAN AMITABH BACHAN AISHWARYA AND ANUSHKA SHARMA

    NONE THE LESS I SUPPORT THE CAUSE…..

    This is not too bad, i welcome this but i think some sports personality as Sachin Tendulka, Sourav Gangully etc and some other personality from different sector such as Mr. Amartya Sen , Mr. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan etc are required bcoze they make our country really proud in place of Deepika in her odd dress.

    I liked the old version. This new version has all bollywood celebrities which is not needed. Also there are no cricket stars in the new version which is not acceptable as they made the country proud.

    Also in the old version they have shown integration in such a way that lyrics were in all Indian languages and Also they showed the specialities of all Indian states which is missing in the new version.

    well…i really appreciate dis video..Obviously, the most telling difference between this and the original version is the list of people that take part in it. But other than that, I see the following thematic changes:

    … See More
    * More languages covered

    * Many instances of artist generations (like that of L Subramaniam or Amjad Ali Khan or Louiz Banks)

    * Inclusion of sign language (what Salman Khan sings)

    * Focus on kids

    * Focus on technology and alternate energy source

    * Westernization
    The very first – the soothing sound of the continuum fingerboard (a keyboard with no keys, you get a sound pretty much wherever you touch, gives a bent effect without using pitch bender) played by AR Rehman.
    So guyss if you quit judging and comparing with the childhood version, you will have fun.

    Guys…rather than comparing old & new, lets just accept the fact that the video was much needed after north indians vs marathi manoos & telangana vs andhra:(I thnk it pretty much symbolises the youth of today nd brings 2gether all those who trying 2 bring abt a change in their respective fields…I think its pretty good.

    The main thing missing from the new version is soul. There is no India in this new version its ll about film personalities and their acting.
    Moreover, I found the older version more lively even without the base and all… Some things should be left untouched. The only good outcome was that people remembered the old thing once again. I wish they start broadcasting the older version again, may be along with new one….

    The one good thing about Phir mile… is that now people(at least I) have started liking the Original even more. And watching my childhood time video was nostalgic. “The good old days…”

    Music is beyond all boundaries, as so as our Achivements. Nice to c, the Young Musicians being the part of the video who have taken all pains and strains to make it a HIT.

    But, the new video has proved that HISTORY CANT B RECREATED (just talking abt the video alone)

    Indians are not change reluctant…Film Stars belong to the Entertainment industry and it would b unfair, if their contributions are not recognised. But, MILE SUR MERA TUMHARA is not a song for mere entertainment or time pass. The older version of the song consider the lyrics, the composition, they all had soul and soberness in that. The new one is fine, but, not to forget the most eminent personalities who have shed their sweats in bringing all laurels to our Hindustan. To name a few – DR APJ, Vishwanathan Anand, Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni, Mr. Ratan Tata, Mr. Narayana Murthy, the list is endless…

    The students studying in various schools who participate in many international seminars and competitions and bring recognition to our country, the Farmers, the Teachers, the BSF ppl who sacrifice their day to day happiness in safegaurding the country, the army/navy officials…

    There are enough Film directors to bring the Bachans and Khans together, but this video was not the appropriate one for the same…

    Deepika Padukone???????????What does her attire / outfit represent?

    Jaago India Jaago…Pls dont bring in changes as far as the Tradition and Culture goes… The beauty of Indian Culture remains in being simple, sober and traditional not just being modern in outfits alone.
