Trusting the machines

by The Big K on March 15, 2010

People cheat.

Machines don’t.

I’m thinking why do we trust machines more than humans? The answer could be – Because they can’t think on their own. So they won’t cheat.

Do you agree with that?

I just obtained some cash from the ATM and I put it in my pocket without counting. ATM’s can’t make counting mistake. I’d never know. Throughout the history, I’ve counted ATM’s money only once and it was exactly equal to what I had expected.

Do you trust various machines more than humans? Say Calculator, Computer, Car, Bike, Wrist Watch etc? Do you count the money you obtain from ATM?

Do you count the money withdrawn from ATM?

Yeah, machines don’t cheat you, but they can fail. ATM machine can make mistake while counting the notes due to some technical failure ending up giving less money, I think.

I haven’t heard of an ATM machine giving less money. Even I don’t count the money given by the ATM, most of the times.

But the world is full of manipulators and wicked people who may try to alter the normal functioning of machines we trust. For eg. Computers.
