Earth Hour & Indian Enthusiasm

So, on 27 March 2010; at 8:30 PM, I switched off the lights and sat idle for some time. Few minutes later, I didn’t feel like I was actually helping the Earth and the situation wasn’t any different. So I turned on the CFL and got back to work.

I really don’t understand the Indian enthusiasm behind celebrating the ‘Earth Hour’. Come on, celebrate it every day; for most of our villages don’t have electricity. Even the cities face hours of load shedding. We are so used to sitting in dark for hours and we are now being told to switch off the lights to protect the Earth? Come on!

I know – you are saying “Big K, you aren’t getting the point…”. I say, My FOOT! Tell the countries that keep the lights on day & night; use indoor lights and completely ignoring the natural light to switch off the lights just for 30 minutes every day – and see the change.

Really it feels so bad to see all the stores here in US keep their lights on full Night. If only they knew the meaning of load shedding..

    Well said.

I had read somewhere that asking Indians to observe Earth Hour is like asking African kids to not eat for one day so the food could be saved when American kids don’t stop eating for a minute.

@Amit: Haha 😛 Well said! Not only America, but lot of developed countries should start minimizing the electricity & petroleum consumption. That would be a GREAT help!
