Recently, I was invited to a meeting held by an Indian NRI who, along with his group of Venture Capitalists were eying India to invest money. His message was clear, “We know the future lies in India and we don’t want to miss out on opportunities. US economy is in shambles and it’s going to take us lot of time (decades) to come out of it”.
The bottom line was clear – people aren’t very optimistic about US economy. And the best way for them to recover from it is to sell arms to other nations in the name of aid for ‘self-defense’. In recent times, US’s interest in India-Pakistan relations is growing and I fear, either of these countries could be their next target. Here’s how it may work – US sells arms to Pakistan to help them defend themselves from ‘Taliban’ or Afganistan or anyone else. When Pakistan buys weapons, India’s concern grows. So India orders weapons from US. Then Pakistan’s security concerns grow. Then they order weapons and so on. When a country invests so much in weapons – they can’t keep those weapons in wearhouses and let them rust. The war follows – which means more weapons.
I imagined if such situation arises and US decides to target India. India’s got no advance techniques to defend on their own and we hugely rely on Russia for the arms and fighter planes. Our government sucks. It would be damn cheap for US to conqur India and capture the huge marketplace we offer.
The bigger question I’ve in my mind right now is – what would happen to our proud NRIs? What will they do? Whom will they support? India or US? What do you think?
