Like you, I don’t care and bother about who participates and wins the Miss India contests every year. We’re happy with our jobs & businesses. You already know how much I love Times Of India. I give them the credit of breaking news online; no matter what they cover. While I go to check the technology news; TOI greets me with large advertisements that totally shade the content. Finding my way through layers of advertisements on TOI’s front page; I often click on the news I don’t want to read; and then because I’m already landed on the page; I give it a go. Today, I stumbled upon the news that Vanya (what does the name mean, by the way?) Mishra has wonthe Miss India 2012 contest. What’s interesting is the final question that was asked to her. It goes like this –

If you have an option, will you create thousand jobs or feed thousand children daily?

Vanya (what does the name mean, anyway?): Little children are innocent and anybody’s heart will melt. I will also try to give them education so that they can feed themselves and their family too.

I think the better answer would have been “create thousand jobs”; because a thousand jobs have the potential to feed even larger population, including children! But as it turns out, logic isn’t more important in such contests than ’emotions’. When you talk about ‘little children’, everyone’s emotional! Everyone quickly begins imagining a thousand hungry children. Come on! Give me a break!

I want to know if that question was asked to you; what would you answer? Why?

If i was on the place of miss India then i would have answered that ‘Creating the Jobs is better than feeding thousand children because it would feed the double children than thousand and plus their other family members too, and also it will increase our countries growth rate and Economical strength.and also other positive things too..

    I have another question –
“why are such questions asked in such contests ?”
I don’t see how an answer to such questions can be used to judge a person’s eligibility to win any contest.

Couldn’t they ask better questions such as “what should be done to reduce economic disparity” and so on.

Note the difference between the two questions. The one I asked seems to be realistic. The one asked in the pageant was simply based on fantasy.

I have an feeling that Vanya is still yet to be matured. If i was in the jury, i would not consider her reply a satisfactory answer.
