Self Control

I remember when I was 16 – something; I used to go to our neighbour’s house for a daily session of ‘Vipasyana’. As far as I know, one of the basic principles of Vipasyana is self-control. For 30 minutes, all of us (attending the session) would try to concentrate on inhaling and exhaling because it was one effective way to keep your thoughts controlled. By control, I’m referring to keeping the mind empty of thoughts and not getting distracted by your surroundings. Sounds very easy to do. All you have to do this – focus on breathing so that its the only thing in your mind. You should not let any other thought touch your mind. Just try it. The point I’m trying to drive home is this “the self-control is as difficult as hell’. That is why I see diabetic people wanting to eat sweets; people with restrictions on intake of oily foods go for it thinking ‘just one more’ won’t do any bad....
